'''Digital Artists Ireland Discord Update!'''

Over the past few years, the Digital Artists Ireland Discord has grown into a community of 350+ artists, designers, technologists and curious minds working with digital media across Ireland.

Alongside moderating the server, the community hosts a monthly online meetup on the first Tuesday of every month. These sessions are intentionally informal. People can drop in to talk about projects, share opportunities, ask questions, or simply meet others working in the field and stay up-to-date

To keep the space active and sustainable as it grows, the organisers are inviting people to shape the next stage of this community project.

This could involve moderating calls, hosting workshops, organising screenings, or bringing new ideas to the space.

Anyone interested, or even just curious, is invited to fill out the short form below to be notified about the next steps.

→ Fill out the form here: https://forms.gle/ep6EKf167n9FYqAx7

'''The Critical Makers Reader. (Un)learning Technology'''

A decade ago many gushed at the possibilities of 3D printers and other DIY tech. Today makers are increasingly shaking off their initial blind enthusiasm to numerically control everything, rediscovering an interest in sociocultural histories and futures and waking up to the environmental and economic implications of digital machines that transform materials. An accumulation of critique has collectively registered that no tool, service, or software is good, bad, or neutral—or even free for that matter. We’ve arrived at a crossroads, where a reflective pause coincides with new critical initiatives emerging across disciplines. What was making? What is making? What could making become? And what about unmaking? The Critical Makers Reader features an array of practitioners and scholars who address these questions. Together, they tackle issues of technological making and its intersections with (un)learning, art and design, institutionalization, social critique, community organizing, collaboration, activism, urban regeneration, social inequality, and the environmental crisis.

<p>Before we get on to the opportunites and events section of this one, we want to give a lil recap of two big undertakings we completed last month, Concept Null 2025 and Emergent Sound System Workshop: </p>

<h3>Concept Null 2025</h3>

<p>Following nearly a year of planning, Concept Null 2025 finally came to life in Dance Limerick on 15 November. It was brilliant to see so many enthusiastic people at both the meetup and the evening performances — ideas flying, artists vibing, and genuinely great energy in the room. Moments like this remind us why we do what we do. Ireland is full of unique work and artists who deserve the spotlight, and we’re so grateful to everyone who came along and made the night feel so special.</p>

<p>The daytime meetup featured a great spread of WIPs and experiments: Róisín Berg kicked things off with a demo of their DIY synth; Sorcha Hassett shared her kinetic-origami master’s project; and Nicolás Rojas showed an AV piece in TouchDesigner. After the break, Walter Nied presented a screen-dance WIP, Sióda McCarthy demoed her Syncmap tool (later used in her performance), and Bánk Burján explored new ideas for his performance practice with the room.</p>

<p>The evening programme rounded everything off beautifully, with a fully improvised electronics set by Róisín Berg & Nicolás Rojas (performing together for the first time); Gaelic harp, voice, electronics and visuals from Mícheál Ó Catháin; a dance-music and Tixl-generated visuals performance by Sióda McCarthy; and Structures, the new live AV show by Pauric Freeman.</p>

<p>Thank you to Limerick City & County Council, the Limerick Arts Office and Creative Ireland for supporting this event through the Creative Communities grant, and to Dance Limerick for sponsoring the night. Huge thanks to Sorcha Hassett and Seán Murray for production and tech, and to Paul Michalski for the extra help. Thank you to Harshini Karunaratne for their mentorship throughout the process. And of course, thank you to all our performers and to everyone who presented at the meetup. Finally, a massive thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a fantastic night!!</p>

<h3>Emergent Sound System Workshop</h3>

<p>This FLINTA-led, one-of-a-kind workshop was led by Concept Null’s Róisín Berg and Synthesize_Her’s Viva Dean for Irish Design Week 2025. Across five evenings in the CSIS MakerSpace and Fab Lab [University of Limerick], participants moved through the full process of building a mono sound system, with conversations around sound-system culture, access and context woven into every session.</p>

<p>We began with signal flow (Day 1), moved into cable-making and laser cutting (Day 2), then spent a day designing and CNC-routing the enclosure in the Fab Lab (Day 3). Soldering drivers, wiring the passive crossover and preparing the electronics took over Day 4, and Day 5 brought everything together - assembling, sealing and testing the final system.</p>

<p>We wrapped up with a Day 6 reception at Starling, where we showed off the finished build, and reaped the benefits of our hard work, listening to music through the newly made system.</p>

<p>Thank you to Irish Design Week for funding us, to the Computer Science and Information Systems Department UL, and Fab Lab Limerick - Gerard Walshe in particular - for supporting us. Thank you to Starling for hosting our reception.</p>

<p>Thank you to the participants, who brought so much creativity, enthusiasm and curiosity to every session; it was an absolutely transformative experience to teach on this project.</p>

<p>Anyways, on to our regularly scheduled programming — as always, if you want to support this project, please share this newsletter! And if you want to submit something, email us at conceptnullofficial@gmail.com </p>

The Arts Council is currently inviting expressions of interest from artists and arts professionals interested in being part of our peer panels, which play a key role in decisions on funding applications.

Every year, independent panels made up of artists and arts professionals assess a large volume of applications and make funding decisions that represent a substantial level of investment in the arts in Ireland.

We are renewing our long list of peer panellists for the first time in six years to enhance the breadth, depth, and diversity of the peer assessment process, so that the make-up of future panels reflects today’s arts landscape

Equity, diversity and inclusion are central to this call, and we welcome applications from artists and arts professionals who reflect the diversity of people and communities in Ireland today, across different backgrounds, artforms, regions and lived experiences.

The first comprehensive introduction to the origins, aspirations, and evolution of live coding.

Performative, improvised, on the fly: live coding is about how people interact with the world and each other via code. In the last few decades, live coding has emerged as a dynamic creative practice, gaining attention across cultural and technical fields—from music and the visual arts to computer science. Live Coding: A User's Manual is the first comprehensive introduction to the practice and a broader cultural commentary on the potential for live coding to open up deeper questions about contemporary cultural production and computational culture. This multiauthored book—by artists and musicians, software designers, and researchers—provides a practice-focused account of the origins, aspirations, and evolution of live coding, including expositions from a wide range of live coding practitioners. In a more conceptual register, the authors consider liveness, temporality, and knowledge in relation to live coding, alongside speculating on the practice's future forms.

There will be a second session on Saturday 25th October where the initial outcomes from the work will be shared and some insight into how practitioners might put open-source methods into place within their XR/Mixed Reality practice.

The exhibition opens to the public on Wednesday 17th September, with the official launch taking place on Saturday 20th September at 2:00 pm, featuring special guest speaker Dr. Francis Halsall. All are welcome to attend. The exhibition will run until Sunday 16th November.

SYSTEM ARMING explores the complex ways digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and transhumanism intersect with contemporary power structures. Through sculpture, film, and installation, the exhibiting artists examine how data mining, algorithms, and machine learning shape our daily lives, and how these technologies are increasingly used to influence or control behaviour, reshaping human agency, perception, and collective intelligence. The works in this exhibition confront the tangible, real-world impacts of these systems, from the psychological strain of algorithmic manipulation to the environmental costs of energy-intensive data centres. SYSTEM ARMING invites audiences to consider the ethical, social, and existential questions of living in a world designed to anticipate, influence, and ultimately arm itself against us.

'''Live Coding _a user's manual'''

Hey all!

We hope you all had time to enjoy the lovely weather we had over the last couple of days, and got a chance to relax and bask in the high temps.

No updates from us this one, still winding down after the chaos of the TD event last month -- hopefully more to come!
Sculptural ’lighthouses’ orient the visitor through the installation space suffused with a dynamic soundscape. At its heart is an Al, which has been trained on data gathered with coastal communities from in and around Galway, responding to attendees to produce evolving, generative visuals projected on sail cloth. ‘Live Landscapes’ is the debut solo exhibition by Limerick-based musician and media artist Mícheál Keating. The show charts five years of engagement with rural Limerick landscape through processes of musical improvisation, field recording, photography, video and writing. Keating’s work casts Limerick in a contemplative and uncanny light—foregrounding hauntology, immanence, and becoming in the landscape, while tracing entanglements between human, non-human, and land.

This exhibition also marks the release of Keating’s new publication + album of the same name. ‘Live Landscapes’ is an 108-page book of 120mm landscape photography produced in collaboration with designer Hugh Heffernan. It is accompanied by an 18-track CD of improvised performances recorded by Keating in outdoor locations across County Limerick, his voice and electroacoustic sounds coalescing with the rural soundscapes. This body of work channels a desire to build collective attention towards the complexity of the land, and to cultivate agency and care in our relationship with place.

'Live Landscapes' is opening in Spacecraft, Limerick, July 18 from 7-9pm, and running 11am-5pm on the 19-20th

Hey!

Along with reaching #50, we have some news to share along with the usual bits!

We’re excited to announce that Derivative will be coming to Europe this summer for three TouchDesigner events—in London, Dublin, and Paris.

Along with Pauric Freeman, we have put all gears in motion to make it possible for them to come to Ireland and experience the great TouchDesigner community we have here.

[[File:dublin_Euro25_0_080525_002034.png]]

The '''TouchDesigner Event Dublin Summer 2025''' will be taking place at '''[https://www.fluxdublin.ie/ Flux] on June 28th, 2025'''. This will be Derivatives first organised meetup in Dublin, and they are really looking forward to connecting in person with the local TouchDesigner community!

From Derivative, Greg Hermanovic and Isabelle Rousset will be there, with other team members potentially joining TBD.

The event runs from 11:00 AM to midnight, with masterclasses and community presentations during the day and a casual social gathering in the evening. The night will include an "Open Beamer" jam session—a dynamic, VJ-style setup where multiple participants project visuals to music from a DJ, often remixing each other's video feeds in real time.

'''Call for Presenters'''

We're currently inviting proposals for '''five 30-minute presentations''' that focus on knowledge and experience-sharing rather than traditional portfolio-style showcases. We like seeing how people work with TouchDesigner—their processes, problem-solving approaches, and key takeaways from projects.
We’re also looking to fill four '''“quickfire” slots'''—a shorter format with a hard stop at 10 minutes.

'''Compensation'''

- 220 Euro for a 30-minute presentation

- 90 Euro for a 10-minute quickfire talk.

We're unfortunately unable to cover travel or accommodation and preference will be given to local (Irish) presenters.

If you're interested in sharing your work, we'd love to hear from you. [https://touchdesigner.notion.site/1e566ffa717680e4aa6dc90098235267 Submit your proposal using this form].

'''Deadline: May 26th.''' We’re on a tight timeline so early submissions are much appreciated.

Stay tune for ticket release date.

If you plan on coming to the event and wish to partake in the "Open Beamer" jam session, please send us an e-mail at '''conceptnullofficial@gmail.com''' ( :

''Alan Butler''

In this lecture, artist Alan Butler discusses The Production of Space, a site-specific exhibition project he created for the Aksioma gallery. Building on a practice that examines the ontology of digital spatial design and video game assets, Butler explores how these digital building blocks produce reality—both online and off. He reveals how the technical creation of images and their origins can shape culture and digital space, and how digital objects can affect the physical world. Butler also shares the theoretical perspectives informing his creative process, illuminating how a series of works emerged around the physical performativity of digital objects. By tracing the journey of these digital constructs from screen to real-world presence, he examines the interplay between virtual and real environments, and what that means for culture and image-making.

We're unfortunately unable to cover travel or accommodation and preference will be given to local (Irish) presenters.
Fingal County Council’s Arts Office is pleased to announce the presentation of new artwork by Fingal artist Adam Gibney – Tidal Composition 1: Fall and Rise. This project was funded through Fingal County Council’s Public Art Programme – Infrastructure under the scheme’s Public Art Award category.

On Thursday 15th May, we invite you to experience the culmination of Tidal Composition 1: Fall and Rise. Central to this project is the SALIE (Sound and Light Interactive Emitter) network - a technological bridge between the Irish Sea and our inner emotional landscapes. This new artwork will be launched as part of this years ‘Hello How Are You?’ Event organised by Thrive Balbriggan in conjunction with partner organisations and individuals.

Adam worked with Thrive Balbriggan and Empower to facilitate engagement with their WRAP Programme participants who brought the SALIE’s and the calming, meditative properties of the sea into their homes. Adam and writer Louise Lewis invited the participants to write thoughts and create images inspired by their interactions with the artwork through a series of workshops. Their words and experiences have formed a beautiful collective poem, the words of which will be visible as a multi-screen installation on Balbriggan beach.
